U.S. Bishops’ Hispanic Affairs Subcommittee Releases Diocesan Survey on Parishes and Hispanic/Latino Ministry

WASHINGTON – To help illustrate the profound impact of the Hispanic/Latino community within the Catholic Church in the United States, a resource kit has been developed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church. The document is part of the implementation of the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry and underscores the ongoing commitment of the USCCB’s Subcommittee on Hispanic Affairs to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Hispanic/Latino Catholics.   The resource contains information such as: 
  • A comparison of the Hispanic/Latino population growth segmented by the USCCB’s episcopal regions from the 2000 Census to 2022 estimates, as well as the estimated U.S. Hispanic/Latino population in 2022 by country of origin.
  • A breakdown of U.S. Catholic adults by generation and race/ethnicity showcases the significant percentage growth of Hispanic/Latino Catholics in Millennial and Gen Z generations.
  • The total population and Catholic population in the United States are categorized by race/ethnicity.
  • A map illustrating the percentage of Catholics who are Hispanic/Latino by diocese.
  • A statistical profile of Hispanic/Latino ministry.
  • A timeline of Hispanic/Latino ministry, including significant events and achievements from 1945 to 2024.
Alejandro Aguilera-Titus, assistant director of Hispanic Affairs under the USCCB’s Secretariat of Cultural Diversity emphasized the significance of the resource kit saying, “Through the statistics and information contained in this resource, we hope to help show the vibrant faith and the richness of the Hispanic and Latino communities within our Church and society.
