Your connection to the Catholic community of New York

Now participating for its 10th year, Catholic Charities New York is one of a number of charitable organizations that gives qualified applicants a slot in one of the most sought-after entries in endurance sports, in exchange not just for running, but also for raising money for their cause.

Last year, the Catholic Charities team raised $75,000 for the St. Nicholas Project, a Catholic Charities of New York initiative. The organization hopes to raise even more this year.

The St. Nicholas Project is a year-round initiative to help the most vulnerable in New York City and neighboring communities by providing support to individuals and families through donations of essential items and connecting them to much-needed services.

In addition to providing food, emergency cash assistance, and case management support throughout the year, the Catholic Charities New York St. Nicholas Project distributes winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, blankets, and more to those who otherwise would go without during the cold winter months.

As many as 1 million runners apply to participate in the marathon, spaces for which are drawn by lottery in March. Charity space is similarly limited, but with more than 550 charities offering slots, a runner's chances of getting to the start line are better than winning the lottery. Team Catholic Charities New York is full this year, but anyone interested in being part of next year’s team and supporting New York’s neediest is welcome to apply beginning in March 2024.

The first New York City Marathon was run in September 1970 with 127 participants. The race begins in Staten Island and touches all five boroughs before ending in Central Park. Now in its 53rd year, the race will welcome an estimated 50,000 runners in 2023.
