ELLENVILLE -- About 100 persons joined Father Kenneth Riello, pastor of the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, and Father Arthur Rojas, a priest who assists with the parishes' Hispanic ministry, in a Eucharistic procession through the streets of Ellenville on Corpus Christi Sunday, June 2, 2024.
"For the last several years, the pandemic being the sole exception, our parish, on Corpus Christi Sunday, has shared our devotion to the Eucharist with our neighbors in Ellenville through our walk of faith with prayer and song in English, Spanish, and Latin," explained Father Riello, alluding to the diversity of his parish.
The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, historically known as Corpus Christi in Latin, celebrates the Catholic belief that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Christ and thus worthy of adoration.
In addition to the priest carrying the monstrance, a squad of men held a canopy over the priest carrying the Eucharist, as altar boys bore candles or swung incense in the procession's path.
A flatbed truck provided transportation to several persons who accompanied the procession but who could not walk the route by themselves. Scores of parishioners were joined by the occasional spectator in singing hymns and praying in English, Spanish, Latin, and liturgical Greek.
Solemn benediction was imparted by the priests at several stations in Ellenville before returning to the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew for the final solemn benediction and closing ceremony. Almost all of the participants then proceeded to the parish hall for a tasty late lunch and fellowship.
The Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew serves southwestern Ulster County, including the village of Ellenville and the towns of Wawarsing, Shawangunk, and Rochester as well as a strip of Sullivan County across the county line.
