Business Manager

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is a historic landmark parish in the heart of Manhattan, recognized as the mother church of the Archdiocese of New York. We serve a vibrant and growing community — especially young adults rediscovering their Catholic faith in one of the world’s great cities. We are part of the Archdiocese of New York and operate under the spiritual and administrative guidance of our Pastor.
Position Summary
The Business Manager is the chief operational officer of the parish, responsible for ensuring that its temporal affairs — finances, facilities, staff, and external relationships — are managed with integrity, prudence, and transparency. This role allows the Pastor and clergy to be fully devoted to the spiritual mission of the parish. The ideal candidate brings strong administrative and financial acumen, a collaborative spirit, and a genuine respect for the Catholic faith and mission.
Areas of Responsibility
Finance, Budget & Banking
- Own the full parish operating budget: prepare the annual budget in coordination with the Pastor, monitor performance throughout the year, and advise on financial planning and priorities
- Manage all parish banking relationships, accounts, and cash flow
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing
- Prepare and submit financial reports to the Archdiocese of New York as required
- Coordinate with the parish bookkeeper for accurate and timely recordkeeping
- Ensure compliance with Archdiocesan financial policies and civil regulations
Personnel & Payroll
- Process payroll for all parish employees on a regular and accurate schedule
- Directly supervise facilities employees and the front desk team
- Oversee and evaluate the parish bookkeeper
- Coordinate (without direct supervision) with the Cemetery Staff, Parish Coordinator, and Music Director
- Manage employee onboarding, records, and compliance with employment law
Facilities Management
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and safety of all parish buildings and grounds
- Coordinate with the Archdiocese of New York for larger capital projects and approvals
- Manage vendor relationships for facilities services (maintenance, security, cleaning, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with NYC fire, building, and health codes
Facilities Rentals
- Manage the rental of parish facilities to external for-profit and community groups
- Negotiate and administer rental contracts and insurance requirements
- Ensure rental activities are compatible with the parish’s mission and schedule
- Maintain rental income records and integrate with financial reporting
Government & External Liaison
- Serve as the parish’s primary liaison with NYC civil government agencies, fire department (FDNY), and police (NYPD)
- Manage required inspections, permits, and regulatory filings
- Represent the parish professionally in all civil and institutional matters
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Business Manager directly supervises:
- Facilities Employees
- Front Desk Staff
- Bookkeeper
The Business Manager coordinates with (without direct supervision):
- Cemetery Staff
- Parish Coordinator
- Music Director
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in operations, administration, or financial management
- Demonstrated experience managing budgets, payroll, and financial reporting
- Strong supervisory and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with NYC regulatory environment (building, fire, health)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, ADP, or similar)
- Respect for the mission and values of the Catholic Church
Preferred
- Experience working in a Catholic parish, diocese, or nonprofit institution
- Knowledge of Archdiocesan financial reporting systems
- Experience with facilities management and/or property rentals in a New York City context
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range is $75,000 - $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include participation in the Archdiocese of New York employee benefits program (health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement), and the opportunity to serve in a historic and mission-driven institution.
