The Breath Behind the Frame

The Breath Behind the Frame
An Easter Season Series Exploring The Spirit's Animating Force in Creative Work

Six Wednesdays beginning April 22nd to May 27th 2026

As we move through the Easter season towards Pentecost, this program explores the role of the Holy Spirit at the intersection of faith and filmmaking. You need not be a filmmaker or even a "artistic person" to participate. You need only be willing to listen — to the Spirit, to your own heart, and to the stories living in the people around you. Over five sessions, you will learn the art and craft of visual storytelling, discover how the Holy Spirit moves through every stage of a film's creation, and collaborate with a team to conceive a story idea, write a treatment and screenplay pages, and produce a short teaser reel. Each session follows a fourfold rhythm: theological grounding in the Spirit's role as co-creator; practical education in the craft of filmmaking; hands-on team competition work; and a closing Spirit practice — prayer, reflection, or contemplative exercise to help you carry the session's learning into your daily life. There is no cost for the program, and all are invited!

The program is presented by Fr Jim Mayzik SJ, an award-winning film producer, writer and director. Fr Mayzik founded the Film and Television major at Fairfield University and was the Director of the Media Center there as well.

The series will be offered from 7-9 pm on Wednesday April 22nd, April 29th, May 6th, May 13th, May 20th, and May 27th in the parish hall of the Church of the Epiphany, 22nd and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan.

The Church of the Epiphany has had a long and proud 150 year history.  At times it has been a dynamic spiritual, social, and missionary presence in our Gramercy neighborhood.  It has served thousands of good people and their families, and we are grateful to stand on the shoulders of wonderful parishioners, clergy, nuns, and teachers who made Epiphany a point of light for so many.
