November 2, 2012

CARDINAL DOLAN CALLS FOR SPECIAL COLLECTION FOLLOWING HURRICANE SANDY

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, has called for a special collection in the wake of Hurricane Sandy to be taken up this weekend. He has also requested special prayers during the weekend masses for those affected by this storm and those who are helping in relief efforts.

The following letter went out today to all parishes within the Archdiocese of New York, a territory which covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties:

My Brother Priest,

We have received inquiries about how we might assist those whose lives have been torn apart by Hurricane Sandy.  Our people want to show charity toward those who are suffering from the devastation that occurred in some communities.

The Archdiocese announces a special collection to be taken up in all its parishes.  Your generosity will help bring needed assistance to New Yorkers who are facing desperate situations as they rebuild their lives.  Please, make this announcement at all the masses this weekend and arrange for the collection in whatever way is best for your parish.  Checks should be sent to the Chancery Office.  The distribution of the monies that are received will be administered by the Cardinal’s Office and a report will be made available to our donors.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

In the Prayer of the Faithful this weekend, please pray for all who are suffering from this tragedy and for all who are working on the relief efforts.

With prayerful best wishes, I am,

Fraternally in Christ,

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York
