Announcement

At their meeting on June 14, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced that musical settings for texts at Mass that will change as a result of the new translation may, with the permission of the diocesan bishop, be introduced in parishes of the United States beginning in September, 2011, that is, before the entire translation goes into effect on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. Archbishop Dolan has given permission for this early use of these musical settings.  Accordingly, the following musical texts may be used in parishes beginning on September 1:

          The Glory to God

         The Dialogue before the Preface

         The Holy, Holy, Holy

The three Acclamations after the Consecration of Mass

This permission applies only to these texts and only when they are sung.  The changes in recited texts will go into effect on November 27 as originally planned.

Please note that these new texts do not have to be sung as of September.  For those who are ready to do so after September 1st, the use of musical settings of these new texts is being permitted because the singing of texts requires more preparation than simple recitation.  This is also an opportunity to become more familiar with some of the new texts as we prepare for the full changes to go into effect.  Ultimately, however, this is a marathon and not a sprint!  Everyone will grow into both singing and speaking the new translation in the months and years to come.

Please see Questions and Answers for Musicians in Anticipation of the New English Translation of the Roman Missal for further information and advice on implementing new music.

New Mass Settings

The following new Mass settings were chosen by the Archdiocese Roman Missal Music Subcommittee as those which were most promising in terms of faithfulness to the new text, musical form, and ability to encourage active participation.  They are:

1.  The plainsong setting in the Roman Missal (ICEL):  The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has asked that this Mass setting be included in all English editions of the Roman Missal, as well as in all missalettes and participation aids.

Practice Audio and Video Recordings, courtesy of the Archdiocese of Boston.

Instrumental accompaniment for this setting is available from these sources:

                 Noel Jones

The Diocese of Leeds in England

                 WLP

                 Jeffrey Ostrowski

2. The Belmont Mass by Christopher Walker (OCP): An accessible plainsong setting, for use with or without accompaniment.

3. Mass of Gregory the Great by Luke Mayernik (OCP): Features easily sung melodies for use in a variety of contexts.

4. Mass of Frances Cabrini by Kevin Keil (OCP): A hymn-like setting for use primarily with organ accompaniment.

5. Gloria Simplex by Richard Proulx (WLP): An elegant plainsong Gloria setting with accompaniment.
